So I would say a little topping IS possible because as a compromise since many of these kind of trees can also be us as hedges you trim back - every year , but then it has to be at the size you want the tree, and maybe you give yourself a pruning job every year .. if it will look bad or not depends on what form your tree has , there are many cypresses as far I know. Know also you can prune back the side branches to keep narrow - but NEVER prune back to needle less wood - then that branch will not soot new like deciduous plants do.
