Donna,
Please don't top your tree! It can do a lot of damage and even lead to the
death of the tree. The International Society of Arboriculture has a good
explanation of why on their web site:
http://www.isa-arbor.com/consumer/topping.html
The National Arbor Day Foundation's web site lists 9 things you should know
about trees. Number one is don't top trees!
http://www.arborday.org/trees/NineNum1.html
Perhaps your tree just needs to be pruned. If it were my tree, I would call a
certified arborist for an evaluation and possible pruning. A mature Cypress
is very valuable and worth the expense.
If you want to do it yourself, here is some good information about how to
properly prune a tree: http://www.isa-arbor.com/consumer/pruning.html
For other information about tree care from the International Society of
Arboriculture, go to: http://www.isa-arbor.com/consumer/consumer.html
Hope this helps, and good luck with your tree. --Janis
