Unless there is some incredibly good reason for topping (?) it is not a good
idea and is at best a last resort, taken only as an alternative to the
ultimate topping: removal. Some here already replied to you that removal is
better. Not knowing your circumstances, and why an 18 to 20 ft tree seems
tall to you, I hate to recommend much. Only that, if there really IS some
good reason for topping, do at least keep it high and at a point on the
trunk where the diameter is as small as possible. Too low and it not topping
so much as amputation.
Hope we hear more from you about the cypress!

Subject: Cypress Tree Question
Is anybody there?
I don't believe I've read a post on this list in quite awhile. Well,
I've got a question.
We have a fairly large Cypress tree in our back yard (probable 18 to
20 ft. tall) and my husband and I were discussing it the other day and
he suggested we "top" it.
The problem is, we don't know when to do this or how much to cut from
the top. We surely don't want to damage the tree in any way.
So, your thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Nononononono! Donna...don't top it. That's tree butchery...will
totally ruin the form forever and not improve the tree's health,
either.
If the tree is too large for your yard, just remove it totally and
put in something that stays smaller, but don't top it.
