I sat in on a conference that pertained to the benefits of using sand
beds for propogation. A sand bed is similar to a sealed raised bed, in
that the water does not flow thru the bottom. Cuttings were taken of
cotinus, and the pots were placed on sand beds. Propogation success
was about 40%, which is remarkable for cotinus. The purpose of the
sand beds is that it waters from the bottom, reducing foliar disease,
reducing leaching of nutrients and many more interesting facts. The
bottom line, cotinus did well in it. Dip the cuttings in a rooting
hormone of sufficient strength for hardwood cuttings.
Good luck.
