According to Dirr's Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation (my
bible on the subject) it roots readily (80-90%) when using softwood
cuttings in June. The trick seems to be that the cuttings must be
overwintered before they are ever transplanted or there are serious
losses (70%). It says further that they will root without hormone, but
have only single, stringy roots, so 8000-10000 IBA talc was the best
used as it produces better rooting. Rooting cuttings singly in nursery
pots and overwintering in a cold frame would probably be the best way
for her to go depending on her USDA zone.
