Laurus going brown?

I have a Laurus nobilis which has been in place and healthy for about 3
years.  I have trimmed the top, to keep it at about 8 feet.  This year,
coming out of winter, the bottom third has browning leaves.  Can anyone
tell me if this is a bad sign, or if these plants have a tendency to
become leafless at the bottom?
