Howdy all,
I've started scanning my slide collection in full force today,
and I've already found a discrepancy. :(
I have a slide labeled as Abies concolor 'Compacta', but it just
doesn't seem right. It was taken out at the Iseli display gardens
in the summer of '94. I put a copy online at
http://www.mallorn.com/~lindsey/horticulture/unknown/abicoc00.jpg
I have another set of more recent slides from the Bickelhaupt
Arboretum that seem more appropriate -- basically a stunted
short little thing.
Krussmann's Manual of Cultivated Conifers seems to agree that
'Compacta' shouldn't be so tall and narrow (as if the name didn't
indicate it anyhow), but I'm at a loss as to what this could be.
It's possibly 'Fastigiata' or 'Pyramidalis', but it's also a
young tree and difficult to tell what it will ultimately develop
into (well, now I have an excuse to go back out to Oregon! :)
Anyone have any ideas on what this is? I'm fairly certain that
it's some form of A. concolor, but I'd like to narrow the field
further if possible.
Thanks,
Chris
