In spring of 2009 I ordered a five-gallon Zelkova serrata 'Schmidtlow' (Wireless[R] Japanese Zelkova) from ForestFarm. We planted it at the base of my parents' driveway and it grew into a nice-looking tree that was around 18' high. They had a storm the other day and a freak gust of wind snapped the tree at the base like a twig, so now they're looking for a replacement. I contacted ForestFarm and they said they won't carry Zelkova any more because of 'weak trunk problems', so it sounds like this wasn't unique to my parents. I'd like to get something fast-growing, with seasonal interest, a height under 25', and the ability to handle Chicagoland winters. Any suggestions? Right now I'm leaning towards Sorbus commixta var. rufoferruginea 'Longwood Sunset' because it seems to check all of those boxes, but I'm not sure how rust-resistant it is. It reportedly does well in Minnesota and can tolerate hot, humid summers, though. What are your thoughts?
