My most spectacular, fragrant shrub that is in bloom now is Plumeria (frangipani). It is very easy to grow provided you have summer heat. It stays perky when the trees start wilting. If you can grow tomatoes, you can grow frangipani. Pick a spot that would be good for cannas and fertilize heavily. In the fall, dig it up and put it in one of those empty peat bags. Place in a cool, not cold basement or garage. They are capable of tolerating severe desiccation, even if the stem starts to shrivel a little it's ok. Don't give any water all winter and it will start growing about when you are ready to plant it out. It is very easy to dig up because of the small root system. It may not bloom every year but it is much more spectacular than a pot grown plant. When it starts to get too big, you will get good cutting material. Root as you would a succulent, too much water or lack of heat will cause it to rot.
