It's funny, I got the rest of you message yesterday, but the introduction
today. It was all very interesting! I love doing this kind of research, so
the list will give me lots of choices. It also gives me options in case my
primary choice is not available, so thanks for all the work. I’ve been using
the landscaping program from “Books That Work”
(http://gardening.com/Default.htm) as well as paper an pencil. It’s pretty
good, although I suspect it makes some sweeping assumptions about the plants
during some of the calculations. I’ve found that it’s good for overall
layout, but it’s too tedious for detail design. For example, one can not tell
the program to put a mass of Crocus in an area as a unit (group in most
drawing packages), each one must be dropped, and manipulated individually if
a change is necessary. I enjoy it, but my wife says I spend too much time on
it. Its also got a pretty good plant database. That’s where I got my original
ideas for what plants to put around the yard.
I like the idea of ‘bays’. I tend to think in straight lines too much. I also
have a tendency to ‘balance’ a planting, you know everything symmetrical.
Neither one looks natural, so I’m trying to break myself of the habit. I’m
really excited about the idea of the contrast among several evergreens,
grasses, and perennials. That, along with the ‘bays’ is causing me to rethink
my plans. I’ve also got a lot of ideas from others in the group. Jose and
Calvin (I think) and all the “August...” group have made great suggestions.
As I said, I have some plants on order. They should start arriving in
September, so by November I should have lots of sore muscles and the basis of
the garden. I’ll try to post some pictures then, just to show everyone that
has helped what I’ve done so far with their suggestions.
