Greetings:
My name's Don Martinson, I work as a research chemist at the Medical
College of Wisconsin and I garden in the climatically-challenged Upper
Midwest. I enjoy trying to grow some of the more uncommon trees and shrubs
for my zone (5). I just recently joined this list and had planned on
lurking a bit longer before posing a question, but a problem has come up
that I need some help with.
Are any of the list members familiar with the Castor Aralia, Kalopanax
pictus? I have had one happily growing in my yard for the past 4 years
with no problems, growing to a height of almost 20 ft. Suddenly, about a
month ago, the leaves along the main trunk started turning yellow, then
falling. This progressed up the trunk and now only the very tips still
have green leaves. Some of the smaller side shoots appear as if they are
shriveling up. I can find no cause for this. No insects are found, we've
had no unusual weather, and there is no evidence of physical damage. Could
this be a problem that is particular to this species?
The local nurseries here are of no help because this species is so uncommon
here.
Can anyone help?
Don Martinson
