Hi Mark,

   Well, I don't know if I can convince you either way, but it _is_
	possible for species that normally exhibit certain characteristics
	to deviate into a less recognizable form.  This is particularly
	evident in young trees, and could account for the opposite/alternate
	combination that you are seeing.  How big are the trees now?

	You could also try identifying the through other characteristics:

	   Are the stems really slimy if you chew on them (U. rubra)?
		Do the leaf scars show 3 distinct bundle traces (U. americana)?
		What do the buds look like (tell me, and I'll try to see if
		   I understand :)
