Couldn't agree with you more about the problem with common names.  However,
Aronia is known as "chokeberry" with, not "cherry".  Aronia melanocarpa is
Black Chokeberry and Aronia arbutifolia is Red Chokeberry.  They are
wonderful.  I wish I had one, too.  In St. Louis we had early warmth this
spring and I actually saw a specimen still loaded with red berries and at the
same time in full bloom.  Absolutely spellbinding!  Of course, this doesn't
usually happen, but my was it grand while it lasted! 

I have no experience growing Prunus virginiana, Common Chokecherry.  But since
no one has answered Gerri's question, I looked it up in Dirr.  The species is
listed as 20-30' tall with an 18-25' spread, and it suckers.  The only
cultivar mentioned is 'Schubert' (Canada Red), which Dirr says is of dense and
pyramidal habit.  A UBC bred cultivar could well have a different habit.  Have
you tried tracking down the breeder?  Good luck!  Wish I could help.  --Janis
