tree damage

My parents have a 30 year old silver maple that was damaged this weekend.
The tree was hit by a car traveling at a high rate of speed (police estimate
around 75 miles per hour). The bark from the tree trunk is totally gone at
the bottom part of the trunk; starting at a height about 4 ft and down and
going around 75% of the circumference of the trunk. The main part of the
trunk is about 2.5 feet in diameter, widening out to around 4 feet at the
base. The 25% of remaining bark at this bottom portion of the trunk is
pretty loose. The city sent out a forestry person who says that it is
likely the tree will die. My dad would dearly love to save the tree if it
is possible since it provides shade for his house and yard. He is willing
to wait to see how the tree will do but feels like he'd like to do something
to help it along. Guess the question is -- is there anything that can be
done? The city forestry person said that they used to put some kind of
overing/coating over the remaining bark to hold it in place but that they
found it didn't help a whole lot.
