It is proven that SOMETHING has caused mass extinction. All scientist in the
field agree with that. What they disagree with is what exactly these events
were that caused the extinction. I agree that diversity is a cherished
event. But diversity depends also, do not forget, on struggle. Natural
selection functions through struggle. It is what causes diversity. We like
to think that nature is this loving force but it is not. It is mean mean
mean. Weather, comets, geologic forces all make drastic changes. They put
the stress on us all that is the fulcrum of natural selection, which in turn
creates this diversity. We are only a new selective force. And we are not
the top of the food chain either. We just happen to be experiencing a
population boom. There are many tiny creatures that predate on us and as
time goes on, since our populations are so healthy and high in numbers, you
will see other organisms benefiting from this. They will eat us; put some of
that natural selective stress back into our lives!
Janis we DO know that there has been mass extinction, and not to the benefit
of any organism. It is the tough stuff that has shaped our flora of today.
