Hi,
Is is sometimes mentioned that we wonder if we are the only culprits in
the exotic plant invasion. We need to remember what makes a plant
invasive outside of it's native envitonment. Usually a plant is kept in
check by bugs, diseases, or soil conditions that make survival difficult
(I'm sure that there are many more reasons). Removed from it's native
enviroment, and removed from the conditions that keep the plant in
check, growth and spread can be rampant.
Usually a plant has to be moved beyond a great physical barrier, say an
ocean or large mountain range, in order to escape it's preditors. We
are the only ones that can give a plant this kind of traveling power.
Nature can make the problem worse, once the plant is relocated, but not
before.
As far as the ANLA is concerned, I am sure they have an agenda in their
newsletter so we have to be careful. I can understand their fear of
government regulation, but saying that an executive order will somehow
effect the private citizen is a pretty far stretch (see the US
consitution). Perhaps they were trying to rile up the troups a bit :-)

Lisa,this was a thoughtful/insightful response..And I have no arguement
with
your findings..Here in the arid climate of s.w.Idaho few(though not all)
of
what you've mentioned (plants)would ever be more than a garden nuisance
but
very unlikely to become invaders of wild settings...I always wonder
about
nature and the methods she uses to spread plant life and since
winds,birds
etc.play such a strong role in the scheme of things wonder if we are the
only
'culprits' in this issue..But I only wish to inform,so that those that
have
