Re: Plants for rotting stumps?

Hello Arnhilde,
Thanks for taking the time to answer! Clematis is a great idea; I do have
one that totally engulfed the stump. But I could use a more decorative one
at the only stump where I can get water to it - Great.
I was thinking about trying to plant something directly into the soft
rotting wood. Will definitely try moving some moss, too.
My giant maples are suffering from honey fungus. Every year we have to cut
down 2 or 3 more because the dead branches are a hazard. After agonizing a
lot, I am now planting in the area with the idea that a healthy tree or
shrub may resist longer and I can enjoy it while it lasts....

I'll include a message from my friend Ron Brightman that made me feel
better:

"Although armillaria has been often mentioned in English books as being
liable to move onto rhodies from old stumps and kill them, I often see long
established Hardy Hybrids around here growing with dried up looking
bootlaces all through the roots. I've also read that armillaria is known to
infest a plant for years but not kill it until a drought or other stress
occurs. So, even though you appear to have the syndrome of armillaria
spreading off of old stumps and devouring native trees and planted
specimens, it isn't necessarily the case that every woody plant you put in
that area is going to be gobbled up.

When there is a big hole made in the forest and it turns out to be caused by
a huge armillaria, it's probably the exception that proves the rule, that is
that armillaria doesn't usually cause havoc."

Maybe someone has a comment on this....
