Here in central Texas I have planted a lot of stumps. Some are still in
the ground but most are hollow logs that I moved to various locations
and filled with soil.
My most successful stump plantings are bougainvillea. They seem to love
the stumps, send roots down to the ground, and over winter better than
those in the ground. My original bougainvillea planted in a hollow log
reached 20' the second year even tho it froze in the winter. :-)
I also have russelia and trailing ruella in stumps. The wood seems to
keep plants warmer in winter and keeps the roots cooler in summer.
