Here is an idea if one of your rotting stumps is hollow. I once saw a
very large hollow stump filled with Linnaea borealis (twinflower). The
enclosing walls of the stump held the scent so that it was discernible
without needing to bury my nose in the flowers.
I can't remember exactly where it was, but it would have to have been in a
moister area of Vancouver Island than I live in. Rainfall varies from
about 300 inches on the west coast of the island to 27 inches in Victoria.
I haven't managed to keep nursery-bought Linnaea or Cornus canadensis
alive here, but Mediterranean shrubs do just fine.
