Blizzard destruction

A few months ago, we had a terrible blizzard here in northwest Kansas.
Needless to say, many of the small baby trees and shrubs in my rural
yard were bent over and cracked by the shear weight of the wind-blown
snow. I had five to seven foot drifts that were so dense, I could walk
on them!

I pruned many of the cracked ragged wood back to where it was still
whole, but after perusing some of the woodyplant archives, I discovered
that maybe that wasn't a good idea. Perhaps I should have waited so that
there wouldn't be die-back to the roots.

What would have been the best thing to do in a situation like that? I am
new to the list, and am grateful for any advice.
