A little while ago I posted a message asking about possible mathematical
correlations between location and flowering times. Given that a plant
flowers in Chicago on April 1st, can I find a mathematical correlation
to another city and interpolate a flowering time for that new location?
To this end I would like to set up the Internet Flowering Time Database.
The idea behind it is that people could enter blooming information for
a given location via the Web. Over time, we may be able to extrapolate
some sort of relationship between cities...
I'm wondering what information to ask. Here's what I have in mind:
1. Person's name
2. Email address (optional, but preferred to double-check strange entries)
3. Species name
4. Zip code of city where blooming, or GPS location for those die-hards
5. Blooming stage (1-5, 1=early, mostly closed buds through 5, mostly
spent blooms, or 0 for unknown)
6. Sun conditions (1-5, 1=full shade, 5=full sun)
People could enter data for any plant that they want, but I would also like
to have 20 or so "key indicator" species. These should be commonly found,
easily noticeable plant. Blooming times should be spread throughout the
growing season. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking of things
like Spiraea x vanhouttei, Cercis canadensis, Forsythia x intermedia,
etc.
The obvious flaw here that people may misidentify species, which is why
I'd like to use the key indicator plants that most everyone should know.
Oh, I also have a zip code to latitude/longitude database...
Does anyone have any comments? Suggestions? I'd like to set this up in
January sometime... If it works out, it's obviously extensible to other
characteristics like the time that plants leaf out, when fall coloration
is effective, etc.
This could really be an invaluable resource.
