PLANT A TREE IN Y2K
WASHINGTON, DC, December 16, 1999 (ENS) - Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman
and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton launched a new national White House
Millenium Council initiative Wednesday to foster the establishment and care
of trees, gardens and open spaces nationwide in 2000. The Millenium Green
kick off event in Washington, DC celebrated "the importance of all trees and
community gardens to the social, economic and environmental life of the
nation," Glickman said. "Such a celebration is desperately needed. Rapid
growth and development, especially in urban areas, are overrunning our
nation's tree cover at an unprecedented rate."
The Millenium Green initiative will promote the preservation and planting of
trees in urban areas to help counter the urban heat island effect, which
occurs when rooftops and roads capture heat, raising urban temperatures. The
preservation of open spaces and trees along waterways will be emphasized, to
help filter pollutants out of storm runoff and capture greenhouse gasses.
"With environmental benefits come economic benefits," Glickman continued.
"Cooler air means lower energy bills for families. And cleaner water means
healthier and more abundant fishing stocks, which represent an important
industry in many of our coastal communities." The Millenium Green kick off
event also saw the dedication of the Hillary Rodham Clinton Tree, a 75 year
old white oak tree at the Department of Agriculture (USDA), that Glickman
said "embodies many of the qualities of the First Lady herself." The oak is
the tenth tree that the USDA has dedicated to an outstanding American in the
past 33 years.
