Re: woodyplants DIGEST V1 #87

I love peonies and planted several herbaceous 5 or 6 years ago... even
brought some down from the old family place in northern Arkansas (USDA zone
6b). They have not done real well for me here in central Arkansas (USDA
zone 7b) but I occasionally get bloom. What bloom I get doesn't last long
because of the heat... or they mummy from the rain.

Last year I bought several Tree Peonies after talking to a lot of people. I
was told that the Tree Peonies should do better that the Herbaceous here in
the South: The earlier bloom time should help. It was also suggested that I
try the singles and those with less complex bloom of both types, as they
are less likely to mummy. I did not have the beds ready for the Tree
Peonies last year so I potted them up. I did get some growth on them in the
pots and they are starting to sprout leaves again right now. No bloom last
year of course. The beds are ready now and I will be planting them in out
next week. My Herbaceous have not sprouted yet.

Home Depot in Little Rock had them (unnamed by color) for $12.95 last week.
