I am somewhat surprised to hear of your lack of sucess with peonies. I grew up
in
the Arkansas, in the hot, humid Missisippi.delta region, on the
river - borderline zone 8. We had herbaceous peonies in bloom every year.
My mother sent me some of these a few years back just before the family
property
was sold. As an aside, those same plants have done very well in New
Hampshire too.
I seem to recall peonies in many other gardens as well when I was growing up.
Maybe you just need to locate the southren heirloom varieties.
