Re: Rhododendron

Well, Donna,

So far, so good except that I don't think that 5 gal pot will be
large enough in the long run. What I'd recommend is getting some
logs or rocks and building a mini raised bed area around that rhodie,
out at least two or three feet from the trunk and then infilling with
your nice mix - and mulching it well with wood chips or pine straw.
The height of your "wall" doesn't have to be quite the height of the
root ball as the soil within the mini bed can slope to the edges
slightly - you don't want a sharp slope or water will run off too
fast, but a slight slope is just fine. Rhododendron Society web
pages have an illustration of what I'm talking
about...http://www.rhododendron.org/LIBRARYsector/planting.cfm

If yours is a tiny little plant, it will be OK in what you have done
until the weather really warms up, when the heat build-up inside that
5 gal. nursery pot will make things pretty warm around the rhodie's
roots. I'd leave it for a month or so and then, when spring is truly
here make that mini raised area and remove the pot. Or, if spring
has truly sprung where you are - no more frosts and warm weather on
the way - best do it in the not too distant.

Keep an eye on your plant and water it well at least once a week for
the first year.
