Japanese maple

Last year after 4 years of gardening I finally bought a Japanese maple. I
did worry about damage from the cold in Montreal (Zone 5) so wrapped it up
with lots of burlap. Luckily none of the big branches which fell during the
ice storm hit it. I watched the squirrels playing with the burlap and
thought they wanted the material for their nests. Today I went out and the
little rodents have chewed off half the maple! The twigs are just lying
beside the tree.
I am surprised, but perhaps I shouldn't be. My questions are 1) Is squirrel
damage a common problem with J maples? 2) Might it die? I think there is a
fair bit of tree left (I was standing on 3' of snow looking into the burlap
cave) but don't know how many leaved branches are left.
