Tom Clothier's new tree/shrub germination database
http://www.anet-chi.com/~manytimes/page64.htm
recommends 3 months stratification for Betula.
However, I had very good germination of Betula albosinensis v. Septrionalis
last season after putting it for only one month in the fridge and
then outside at the end of February. On the other hand, B. papyrifera
and B. ermanii, sown at the same time and treated the same way, have
shown no signs of life yet.
In the past I have found seed of B. utilis var. jacquemontii (from
Chilterns) has germinated very readily.
