To anyone or everyone
on the subject of Rhododendrons:
I did not realize that we, in the upper southeast portion of the state
of Mississippi could grow rhododendrons with any sucess, however I have
taken advantage of my local library during this non-gardening time and
am reading.
I have a book named "The Southern Garden" by Ben Arthur Davis. the book
was published in 1971, but I am hoping that his writings still ring
true. I believe he is quoating from an article by Arthur L. Coyle on
the subjec of rhododendrons in the South.
Mr. Coyle has named a few that supposely are bred for the Southern
climate. I have chosen Alba Elegans, Apple-blossom Pink (R. catawbiense
albus) as my first project to try, and I am in need of all the advice I
can get. I thought I would start with one plant and if I don't kill
one, then it's full speed ahead.
keep in mind, here in NE Mississippi we have high heat, high humidity,
and from July on it's a nightmare. everyone knows how this past season
treated a lot of people, so keep this in mind and if you don't think
it's a wise idea, then let me know.
Thanks
Donna in NE Mississippi zone 7
