Dot and Donna,
The point of my email was not to incite depression or envy, but just to
point out the paradox of us as gardeners/people -- always wanting what we
can't have and not appreciating what we do have.
I was born and raised in California and because of that, even though I live
in Oregon now, I can't abide tropicals! There is a real craze here for
"tropicalisimo" as someone has coined it, and I just can't imagine adding
cannas and bird of paradise to my garden. I can barely tolerate the thought
of brugmansia and agapanthas (the agapanthus were the plants they used in
all the boulevard dividers, so you can imagine how common they were).
The only plants I wish I could still grow -- probably to the degree you wish
you could grow rhodies -- is gardenias and 'Alice DuPont' -- oh drat, what
is that vine's name? Starts with an "M" I think. Anyway -- I do miss those
plants a lot and have tried them here, hopeing to succeed even for a few
mild winters, but no such luck.
I think a plant you can grow that I cannot (to make you feel better) is
commonly called Carolina jessamine -- I can't remember the botanical name.
Tried that a few times here too (it has yellow flowers and I'm a sucker for
yellow), but failed miserably.
So you can gloat and tell me how incredibly your plants are doing that I
can't grow!
