Re: Shrubs for shade
Hi,
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) is a favorite of ours. It grows naturally in
medium shade, it will grow large and full in partial shade. It will survive
deep shade, but is rather open and gangly. I am growing most of ours in
afternoon shade and they are very large, 6 to 7 feet. We have a couple
growing in full sun and they survived a drought last year without a problem.
Spicebush and Sassafras are the larval food of the Spicebush swallowtail
butterfly. We get caterpillars every year.

Hi Frank,
I was curious about your inclusion of Lindera. I've always wanted to
include this shrub in my garden, but thought it required sun (isn't it a
butterfly plant?). I'd like to hear of your experiences.
