I have been growing Cersis canadensis "Silver Cloud" for
5 years in my z5a/b New Hampshire location. I have found
it to be not adequately hardy (but see note below). I have it
planted in an area that also has C. c. "Forest Pansy". Forest
Pansy is often rated as being less-hardy (Z6). But here, the Forest
Pansy has fared better than the Silver Cloud. The Forest Pansy has
been damaged only once in 6 years. The Silver Cloud has twig
damage every winter. The Forest Pansy has bloomed twice for me,
the Silver Cloud never. (Since they are primarily foliage plants,
the lack of blooming this does not really bother me.).
Another annoying problem is leaf-burn in the summer on the Silver Cloud,
despite it being in an area with only 2 hours of direct sun a day (and it's
a pretty northern sun at that).
Note: I have trouble with al redbuds here. I have 3 vanilla Cersis
canadensis,
and one "Royal White". All but the Royal White have suffered in
some winter. The damage consists of trig dieback, sometimes severe. They
often leaf-out as late as July. I know they are by nature late to flush by
but July
is a month past typical. None of mine bloom consistently.
