It does indeed send out little rootlets that latch onto objects quite 
firmly.  I've had one growing for three years at the base of an oak
tree on my parkway.  Although it's only about 2' high right now, the
four vines or so are quite firmly attached.  

It also seems to create new plants quite readily -- one vine went off
away from the tree and has a nice set of roots on it now...
