Well, congratulations, Barbara!
I'd use any good potting mix if you don't make your own, with some
added grit or perlite for drainage. You can also pot in pine bark
fines; a lot of nurseries do this. Or you can mix a good grade peat
based potting mix with some pine bark fines. I always add grit to
make sure drainage is sharp. In pots this is very important so the
roots don't rot in soggy mix. You'll need to feed this baby once it
has good roots - Miracle Grow diluted should do the trick or even
some Osmacote.
Planting it out all depends on the root system it develops. If it
fills the pot it's in (at least a quart pot) nicely by fall and
you're still going to be in SC, then you could sure try planting it
out. If you're in doubt, just bury the pot outside for the winter in
a relatively sheltered spot and plant it in spring. If it has just
rooted you don't want to plant it in too large a pot; better to pot
it on as it needs it. Tall, narrower pots are better for trees than
short squatty ones.
If you find it has made good roots, and looks like it needs potting
on (the roots are filling the pot and starting to circle in it), then
you can plant it out while it's still in growth in the fall - you
don't have to wait until it's dormant...you can plant container
plants any time the ground isn't frozen, really (of course, depending
on where you are gardening). Dormant is more for plants you've dug
up to move.
