rooting dogwood

About two months ago, anticipating a move this summer, I put a cutting of a
sentimental dogwood in perlite under a plastic bag. It seems to have rooted,
and I know it probably will need to stay in a pot for awhile, but how long and
in what planting medium? Would it be too soon to try to plant it out this
winter at our new house, when it's dormant? Thanks for any advice; I'm a
novice at this!
