Mea, the Moonlight is silver leafed while the climbing hydrangea is just green. I also have a green Schizophragma hydrangeoides I think. The silver leaf is prettier.

A number of years ago I replaced a Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight' which hadn't lasted very long in my garden. The problem is I can't remember if I replaced it with the same, or changed to the climbing Hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala). The vine is quite healthy and starting to take off, but no blooms yet. Any tips on the differences between the two so I can identify which one I have? Thanks! For years now I've had a Schizophragma hydrangeoides 'Moonlight' climbing up the trunk of a young oak tree at the bottom of my driveway. In the beginning growth was kind of slow, but a couple of years ago the vine took off and climbed about thirty feet up into the crown. Every year there has been some dieback, but it has always grown back up again (zone 5b). Anyhow, I noticed blooms on it for the first time ever yesterday! I took a photo (at 8pm with a flash, so it's horrible) that can be viewed at http://www.mallorn.com/~lindsey/schizophragma.jpg The flowers are only at the base of the vine right now, but I look forward to the day when there are many more. :) I was also surprised to learn that they're fragrant! The scent reminds me of linden blossoms a little. Even in thise less than idea conditions, my plant flowers year and so far, after 5 years, is about 10' tall. I'll take it! I'll have to check out the fragrance! The pictureisgreat, enough so that this plant's on my short list:-)It's definitely worth it -- I love the way those silvery leaves light up the bottom of the driveway and it complements the Brunnera 'Jack Frost' and hosta in the area. I've found that pink-flowering Impatiens and hardy geraniums (like G. x cantagbriense 'Biokovo') really pop against it as a backdrop too. I planted the dwarf one ('Brookside Littleleaf') a few years back at the base of an old baldcypress, but it hasn't done much at all. I hope it takes off an flowers sometime too! This spring I'm planting 'Roseum' at the base of our giant white pine. I hope it doesn't take as long to get blooms from that one too! :) Here's a photo (not mine): http://www.svnursery.com/Schiz_Roseum.jpg Chris http://www.hort.net/gallery/date/2009-06-04/ The latest additions http://www.hort.net/gallery/ 4299 online plant photos and growing! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jun 2009 12:49:59 -0400 From: "Christopher P. I had a flat of S. hydrangeoides 'Roseum' left in my yard and they all came back beautifully, despite the lack of protection and root exposure. We had some cold temperatures, but those 4" pots provided enough insulation! I'm thrilled to hear that yours bloomed so quickly. Maybe I won't have to wait so long for my other ones to flower!
