I vote for:
All 'round interest - Cornus florida (Dogwood) Form is nice, even bare
branch; the well-known flowers come in April, for me, and last for a couple
of weeks, depending on weather; followed by red berries in fall and nice
fall leaf color, reds and burgundies and the next year flower buds add
texture to the winter interest. This is native to our woods and I have a
lot of them, they really light up the garden and say SPRING!
For spring only - guess my favorite has got to be Viburnum x carlcephalum -
the Fragrant Viburnum. This will not win the overall shrub beauty contest,
although the open habit to about 10' is not unpleasing. But in early
spring (Early to Mid April for me) it absolutely fills my garden with the
most intoxicating fragrance. The flowers start out as big round balls of
pink bud, opening white and last for two to three weeks before fading. It
is really the shrub that starts my garden season.
