Have you tried the "folded-over burlap strip" method? It worked for us
in Upstate NY.
You take a strip of burlap (or old sheet) about 10 inches wide, tie it
folded over around the trunk. The caterpillars come down to earth in
the day and try to climb back up at night, but can't get over the burlap
and are trapped in the fold. Then you take great pleasure in going out
and squashing them the next am.
