These answers are from Mike Dirr's book, Manual of Woody Landscape Plants:
> I need advice on making cuttings of the following:
>
> Camellia Japonica
"Cuttings are best collected from May to September, and in the fall, about
November; cuttings should be taken from the current season's growth just
below the fifth node; 3000 to 8000 ppm IBA is effective, sand and
peat or peat and perlite, mist or poly-tent are the other important
ingredients ... Camellias are also grafted and air-layered."
> Sassafras (sentimental value)
He doesn't list anything for Sassafras, but does say that seeds stratified
at 41F for 120 days will work, as well as root cuttings collected in
December and placed 2:1:1 peat:loam:sand mixes.
> Sweetbay Magnolia
"Cuttings can be rooted and I have taken softwood material from 2 to 3
year-old plants, treated with 1000 ppm IBA-quick dip, placed in sand
under mist with 100% rooting; mature wood should be collected in June-July
and treated with about 10,000 ppm IBA for best results; have had a
difficult time rooting cuttings from mature trees."
