Cicada damage

Has anyone else had much damage from the recent cicada cycle? We have only
the 13 year brood here, but the damage has been pretty bad, particularly
for my younger trees. Two 5' crabs I planted this spring, which flowered
beautifully and were fruiting well, are losing all their branches. The
older 'Prairie Fire' is also being heavily pruned. I am also losing
branches on Aronias, maples, hawthorns, birches and dogwoods. There are
places in my garden that I don't even want to walk in anymore; it hurts to
much.
I try to be philosphical about natural damage, but this is a young garden
and I feel like I have lost all the ground that I gained since I started.
Tea and sympathy, anyone?
