Lisa,
Take comfort in the fact that the cicadas will be gone in a few weeks.
Usually the damage they do is not serious and you can just prune off and burn
any damaged limbs after they are gone. Cicadas do not feed at all in the
adult stage. The damage is done when the adult females lay their eggs in the
tree limbs and splinter the wood with their egg-laying apparatus. If you
don't destroy the damaged limbs the grubs/nymphs will feed on the tree roots
for seventeen (or 13) years. Don't panic! It is usually not serious damage.
But young fruit trees are particularly vulnerable, so a good clean up would be
advised in your case. Good luck, and please keep us posted on the outcome.
