I concur. I grow mine up a trellis - the base of the vine is about 10" or
more in diameter - it's probably 15 to 18 years old. It continually puts
out new "branches" from the root area which, since the ground level is
pretty wild, manage to sneak along until I get around to hacking them back,
when some will be 20 or 30' long. I generally get around to attacking this
twice a year. Last fall, I pulled some of these and coiled them up and
knotted them to themselves and dumped them on the ground, planning to come
back later and dispose of them.
Well, you can guess that "later" didn't happen. I was out there last
evening, launching my first attack for this year, and upon clearing away
the "native" growth (read weeds), I discovered that several of these coils
had not only rooted firmly, but sent out long whips of their own.
So, IMO, this is a lovely vine that needs monitoring or it will eat the
world. Every year I have to go up on the roof and whack it back or it
would cover the house. Luckily it's a section of flat roof:-)
