Pruning a saucer magnolia

Does anyone know if a saucer magnolia can be kept pruned to a certain
size?

I've been told that saucer magnolias, especially when older, resent
pruning and sometimes can die due the the fact that the wound won't heal
over on older trees.  Is this true? TIA
