How about a river birch?

I found a tree of which I took a photo.

I think now that it IS probably a river birch (Betula nigra). I guess the younger stems are move exfoliating and I just hadn't run across an on-line photo that showed the bark as I remembered it.

Thanks to all who hazarded a guess.
