Hi Don,

I'm not sure I can visualize what you're describing. My first
reaction was Betula nigra 'Little King':

      http://wp.nres.uiuc.edu/plant/betnilk70
      http://wp.nres.uiuc.edu/plant/betnilk01

But the bark is creamier and less gray than you probably mean.

About how tall is is the shrub?

Other options that I can think of are:

      Acer buergeranum
      Acer triflorum
      Parrotia persica
      Philadelphus coronarius
      Syrina reticulata

I think these are all listed at the wp.nres.uiuc.edu site.

Chris
