Hi,
I've been reading the responses to Don's inquiry re his new property with
great interest, and need to research many of the ones mentioned. The London
Plane tree (Platanus x acerifolia), however, is one I am quite familiar with
as it is the street tree for my house, so I thought I'd throw in my two
cents. While the bark and structure of my mature tree are quite lovely, all
in all I'm very disappointed with it and wish I had a different street tree.
In Maryland, it starts dropping its leaves early, often in August rather
than in October. It also has no fall leaf color other than a drab brown.
After a storm, I always have to clean up a lot of small branches which have
broken off. That, along with the peeling bark will be tree litter in front
of your establishment.
One tree used a lot in my town is Gleditsia triacanthos (I'm not sure of the
spelling, and I'm not where I can check it right now). I'm also not sure
about salt tolerance. It will provide dappled shade, and the leaves when
dropped will blow away, so not a lot of tree litter to clean up. This is
one of my favorites.
