I use Epilobium septentrionale. It used to be Zauschneria septentrionalis, and has a common name of Humboldt County Fuschia. It dies back a bit in winter, but comes out bright green early in the spring, turns silvery gray, and had scarlet flowers in August-September. It spreads easily but I don't find it invasive. It never gets higher than 6 inches and coexists well with Tritileias, Calochortus, etc. I'm also experimenting with a Polygonum paronychia. However, it has only been in the garden for about 5 months, and I'm not sure how well it will work.
