I'm guessing that you're talking about the everyday, run-of-the-mill
kind of Forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia), so I'll base my info on that.
How many you need to plant depends on how much space they have to grow.
If you're planting them in a very narrow strip and will shear them
heavily, you'll probably need more. It also depends on how quickly you
want results. It's too bad -- I just dug 5 huge ones out of my parent's
yard last year :).
The quickest and easiest way to get yourself some forsythias is by
cuttings. Go buy a small container of RootTone (about $3.00), dip the
cuttings in water, then place them in the container until the bottom
of the stem is fairly well dusted. Then stick it in the ground where
you want a new one. Voila! We did this for about 40 cuttings for our
neighbors many years back, and now they have a huge 10' hedge that shades
out our vegetable garden. :(
