Hi Susan!
I'm afraid that the Kalmia probably would not do too well here
in East Central Illinois -- they'll never look as good as the
photos in your catalogs.
They perform best in sunny locations, so placing them in dense
shade may keep them cool and provide more moisture, but
your shrubs will be more gangly and less floriferous.
But I also understand the "I just have to try it" mentality.
Otherwise, it wouldn't be any fun!
