Beginner evergreen planter questions

Hello

Last October I planted 6 evergreens as a screen (arborvitae, juniper,
red cedar) purchased from local small nurseries and a home supply
store. I didn't pay too much attention at the time of planting to
what these trees were grown in at the nursery, but did notice sand
around the arborvitae. Most of these plants look o.k.now, except one
sand grown arborvitae. Digging it out and noticing how dry the sand
was in relation to the surrounding clay soil leads me to my questions.

How much should I be concerned about what the tree is originally
grown in? Besides looking at shape and general condition of the
plant, how do you pick out a tree? And are container grown plants, in
general, a better choice?

Thanks,

Gail
