My Fothergilla major has, over the past couple of years, begun to lose some of its main branches. The plant itself seems healthy enough, but periodically, a large branch (1/2 inch in diameter or so) just begins to wilt and die. One is dying right now as the plant is flowering Examination at the base of the plant shows nothing.
Any hint as to what might be going on? Should I just cut off all the larger branches and let it sprout anew?
